Did you hear? The “big light” is out. Instead, we’re opting for cozy and warm floor lamps that illuminate our space while creating a sense of calm throughout our living room. How we light our homes can affect how we’re feeling — and having a warm, inviting lighting situation in our environment can even positively affect our mood. When looking for floor lamps, we’re specifically looking for thoughtful brands that take into consideration not just beautiful design, but also quality materials, environmental impact, and fair labor practices. 

Why should you consider sustainable, nontoxic floor lamps?

The furniture and decor we bring into our homes can directly impact both our health and the environment. We look for floor lamps that are made with natural, recycled, and responsibly sourced materials, as well as thoughtful and ethical manufacturing processes. We also look for lamps that are not treated with harsh chemicals that could off-gas toxic chemicals into our homes. This is important because toxic chemicals can have an adverse impact on our health and home environments. 

What should you think about when purchasing a floor lamp?

It’s important to think about where you plan to put your floor lamp, considering the size, shape, cord length and switch. Some lamps have switches on the floor that you step on, while others are turned on near the top of the lamp. If you’re placing the lamp behind your couch, for example, you might opt for a lamp that has a higher up switch since you might not be able to reach a button on the floor behind your couch. 

Also consider whether you want the lamp to be a design element in the space, purely functional, or a mix of both. Some of the lamps on this list have a high price tag because they are handmade by artists or have elaborate designs; if you’re thinking of your lamp as a piece of art as well as a light, than these investments are worth it! If you’re just looking for something simple to illuminate your space, you might want to opt for something a bit more simple that blends into the space. 

In terms of looking for thoughtfully designed floor lamps, look for floor lamps handmade in the U.S. These are often products made by artisans and produced ethically in small batches. Also, look for lamps made from ethically sourced natural materials. 

What are the relevant certifications? 

Unfortunately, there are not many relevant certifications specific to floor lamps at this time. One that does exist is the Fair Trade Certification, which determines if products were made in factories using ethical practices.

West Elm has a ton of floor lamp options to choose from, with many being Fair Trade certified and/or contract grade, meaning they’re built to last because they’re made not just for homes but also commercial projects. When you’re looking through all of their floor lamps, you’ll see these certifications listed under the product names. We love the wide range of floor lamps they have to offer, from this classic acacia wood lamp to this modern brass and glass org lamp to this mid-century arched lamp. Another thing we love about West Elm is that they have lots of floor lamps that are part of larger curated collections — like this one that’s part of a collection designed by Colin King Torchiere — so you can easily find furniture, lamps, and more that all match.

2. Schoolhouse

Best For | Retro floor lamps
Price Range | $700-$1900

Schoolhouse’s philosophy around furniture and home decor is “designing beautifully crafted modern American heirlooms.” They focus on creating products that last a long time and align with their values of simplicity, utility, quality, and timelessness. They have a small but beautiful collection of floor lamps, and two of them are made right at their factory in Portland, Oregon (the others are designed in Portland but are from China). The Arbor Floor Lamp is one of their original pieces, and it’s hand painted and assembled in their factory using ethically sourced materials. The Bento Floor Lamp is too, and it’s part of a collaboration between Schoolhouse and lighting brand Roll & Hill. Schoolhouse also consolidates shipments to reduce their carbon footprint and limits use of plastic packaging.

3. Lulu & Georgia

Lulu & Georgia has whimsical and design-forward furniture and home decor, from rugs to bedding to lighting. They have a specifically sustainable collection, which includes a few stunning floor lamps, like this lovely wavy u-shaped lamp, this unique parasol-shaped wicker lamp, and this classic and functional arched lamp. The brand is focused on creating products that are ethically made and sourced, and they source sustainable materials whenever possible. 

4. LannaPassa

If you’re looking for a unique, natural floor lamp that adds a warm touch to your room, LannaPassa is a great option. The family-owned business creates woven floor lamps that are made from natural and organic materials, like bamboo and natural wood. They come in various sizes, weaves, and colors, and you can customize the cord length and switch placement to perfectly fit to your space’s needs. LannaPassa uses authentic materials and methods of ethnic hill tribe communities and every purchase gives back to the same communities that inspire the products.

Founder Virginia Sin officially launched SIN full-time in 2016 after growing the business on the side since 2006. There is only one floor lamp available from SIN at the moment, but it’s so adorable and one-of-a-kind that we had to include it on this list. The Kyo Floor Lamp is made from ceramic stoneware and brass, and it’s handmade at SIN’s Brooklyn studio. It has a beautiful sand finish and a playful lampshade inspired silhouette.

6. Etsy

Best For | Handmade floor lamps

Etsy is a great option if you want to support small businesses and makers, as there is a selection of handmade floor lamps designed and made right here in the U.S. For example, we love this simple and timeless handcrafted bronze floor lamp made by Phoenix based AWAYFROMOBJECT. Etsy also has a selection of vintage floor lamps, like this beautiful wooden flower lamp from Tampa-based lighting curator SolarAuraDecor. A tip for searching for floor lamps on Etsy is to look at the description for the materials, where it’s made, where it ships from, and if it’s vintage or not.

Chairish is an online marketplace for lightly-used, high-quality vintage and retro furniture and home decor. They focus on keeping high quality items out of landfills and instead in our homes! If you are looking for something specific or highly unique, this is a great place to browse! They have everything from simple modern floor lamps to rare vintage floor lamps to one-of-a-kind sculptural floor lamps.
